India announces prohibition of religious school activities

A court in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, has declared the activities of Islamic schools illegal.

According to Reuters, the court in its ruling annulled the 2004 law pertaining to religious schools in Uttar Pradesh and stated that this law violates India's constitutional secularism.

The report also states that this action could potentially alienate many Muslims from the Hindu nationalist government led by Narendra Modi on the eve of elections in the country.

This comes amid reports of Muslims in India being harassed and persecuted by Hindu extremists.

Late last month, Hindu extremists attacked Muslim students at Gujarat University who were praying, resulting in injuries to some of these students.
